The National Energy Technology Center (ENTEC), National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), welcomed the delegation from the Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE) as part of a training program on smart energy technologies. The visit provided an opportunity for the delegation to explore ENTEC’s research and innovation in energy technologies, as well as exchange knowledge and experiences with ENTEC researchers.
The delegation was welcomed by Dr. Somboon Sahasithiwat, Executive Director of ENTEC, together with ENTEC researchers and research teams. The program included an overview of ENTEC’s mission and research activities, followed by presentations on renewable energy and biofuels, delivered by Dr. Peerawat Saisirirat, Leader of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Research Team, and energy storage technologies, presented by Dr. Jiravan Mongkoltanatas, Research Team Leader, and Dr. Priew Eiamlamai, Researcher. The delegation also visited ENTEC’s research facilities and laboratories to learn more about ongoing research and technology development.
Dr. Somboon Executive Director of ENTEC, said that DEDE is an important partner of ENTEC, with the two organizations having maintained close and continuous collaboration in various areas, particularly renewable energy and biofuels. The collaboration has also expanded to future fuels such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), which is an important area for reducing carbon emissions in the transport sector. This collaboration reflects the changing energy landscape and the need to move beyond simply producing and supplying energy towards designing an integrated energy system that addresses efficiency, energy security, resilience, decarbonization, and the adoption of emerging technologies. ENTEC is committed to serving as a national research and innovation mechanism that supports government agencies in developing knowledge and technologies to address Thailand’s energy transition.
Dr. Somboon added that ENTEC’s role goes beyond generating energy-related knowledge. ENTEC serves as a bridge connecting research, technology, innovation, and collaboration with government and relevant stakeholders, helping translate research outcomes from the laboratory into practical applications and contributing to the development of Thailand’s future energy system. The visit therefore not only provided an opportunity to tour ENTEC’s research facilities, but also served as a platform for researchers and energy policy and technology practitioners to exchange perspectives across a broad range of areas, from clean energy generation and smart electricity management to alternative fuels for the transport sector and energy storage technologies that can enhance the flexibility and resilience of future energy systems.
Building strong networks among research organizations, government agencies, and relevant stakeholders will be essential to translating research and innovation into real-world applications, particularly as Thailand addresses the challenges of energy transition and greenhouse gas emissions reduction. The visit also provided an opportunity to explore potential new research areas and future collaboration between DEDE and ENTEC.
Highlights of the Visit
The Solar Photovoltaic Research Team, led by Dr. Amornrat Limmannee, Team Leader, with Dr. Thaweewat Krajangsang, Researcher, presented ENTEC’s research on solar energy technologies, covering the development of solar cells and photovoltaic modules, as well as technologies for monitoring and managing end-of-life solar panels.
The Smart Grid research session, presented by Dr. Perawut Chinnavornrungsee, highlighted the development of technologies for electricity generation and management as energy systems transition from conventional models towards more flexible, intelligent, and integrated systems.
The delegation also explored research in renewable energy, clean fuels, and advanced chemistry, including ENTEC’s EnPAT project on bio-based transformer oil and H-FAME, a premium biodiesel technology. The research was presented by Dr. Boonyawan Yoosuk, Leader of the Clean Fuel Technology and Advanced Chemistry Research Team, and Dr. Peerawat Saisirirat.
In addition, the delegation learned about ENTEC’s research in energy storage technologies, a critical area for supporting the integration of renewable electricity and enabling more efficient and flexible energy management in the future. The session was presented by Dr. Manop Masomtob, Researcher.
