ดร.พรประภา พิทักษ์จักรพิภพ นักวิจัย ทีมวิจัยเทคโนโลยีเชื้อเพลิงสะอาดและเคมีขั้นสูง เอ็นเทค สวทช. ให้ข้อมูลว่า ปัจจุบัน น้ำมันหล่อลื่นส่วนใหญ่ผลิตจากการกลั่นน้ำมันปิโตรเลียมซึ่งเป็นแหล่งพลังงานที่ไม่หมุนเวียนและส่งผลกระทบต่อสิ่งแวดล้อม โดยประกอบด้วยน้ำมันหล่อลื่นพื้นฐานประมาณร้อยละ 90 และอีกร้อยละ 10 เป็นสารเติมแต่งเพื่อปรับคุณสมบัติให้เหมาะสมต่อประเภทการใช้งาน อย่างไรก็ตาม การนำน้ำมันปาล์มมาใช้เป็นน้ำมันหล่อลื่นพื้นฐานชีวภาพมีข้อเสียคือน้ำมันปาล์มมีสภาพกึ่งแข็งกึ่งเหลวที่อุณหภูมิห้อง และมีเสถียรภาพต่ำ ดังนั้นทีมวิจัยจึงพัฒนาเทคโนโลยีการผลิตน้ำมันหล่อลื่นพื้นฐานชีวภาพจากน้ำมันปาล์มเป็นวัตถุดิบ โดยผ่านกระบวนการสังเคราะห์เพื่อปรับโครงสร้างทางเคมี ให้มีคุณสมบัติด้านการไหลเทที่ดีขึ้น คือไม่เกิดการแข็งตัวในช่วงอุณหภูมิที่ใช้งาน และมีเสถียรภาพสูงขึ้น ทำให้ทนทานต่อการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางกายภาพและเคมี ประเทศไทยเป็นผู้ผลิตปาล์มน้ำมันรายใหญ่ของโลก โดยผลผลิตส่วนใหญ่ป้อนเข้าสู่อุตสาหกรรมอาหารและพลังงานทดแทน แต่ทุกวันนี้เกษตรกรไทยกำลังเผชิญกับปัญหาปาล์มน้ำมันล้นตลาด ภาครัฐจึงเร่งหาทางออกด้วยการส่งเสริมการสร้างมูลค่าเพิ่มให้ปาล์มน้ำมันและผลักดันอุตสาหกรรมโอเลโอเคมีมูลค่าสูง ซึ่งเป็นอุตสาหกรรมใหม่ที่น่าจับตามองและมีโอกาสเติบโตอย่างมากในอนาคต เนื่องจากผลิตภัณฑ์โอเลโอเคมีเป็นที่ต้องการสูงในตลาดโลกและยังเป็นอุตสาหกรรมที่เป็นมิตรต่อสิ่งแวดล้อม สอดคล้องกับทิศทางการพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจโลกในปัจจุบันที่มุ่งเน้นการพัฒนาอย่างยั่งยืน กระทรวงการอุดมศึกษา วิทยาศาสตร์ วิจัยและนวัตกรรม (อว.) โดยศูนย์เทคโนโลยีพลังงานแห่งชาติ (เอ็นเทค) สำนักงานพัฒนาวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยีแห่งชาติ (สวทช.) พัฒนาเทคโนโลยีการผลิตน้ำมันหล่อลื่นพื้นฐานชีวภาพจากปาล์มน้ำมัน (biolubricant base oil) เพื่อทดแทนการนำเข้าน้ำมันหล่อลื่นพื้นฐานจากปิโตรเลียม เป็นการยกระดับอุตสาหกรรมปาล์มน้ำมันพร้อมทั้งขับเคลื่อนอุตสาหกรรมโอเลโอเคมีมูลค่าสูงของประเทศตามนโยบายของรัฐบาลที่มุ่งส่งเสริมการพัฒนาผลิตภัณฑ์โอเลโอเคมีเป้าหมายรวม 8 ผลิตภัณฑ์ หนึ่งในนั้นคือผลิตภัณฑ์สารหล่อลื่นพื้นฐาน (base oil) หรือน้ำมันหล่อลื่นพื้นฐานเพิ่มเติมสารเติมแต่งเพื่อการเป็นผลิตภัณฑ์น้ำมันหล่อลื่นเฉพาะทาง ซึ่งปัจจุบันตลาดโลกมีความต้องการน้ำมันหล่อลื่นพื้นฐานมากถึง 14 ล้านตันต่อปี และน้ำมันหล่อลื่นและจาระบี 36 ล้านตันต่อปี (ข้อมูลจาก สำนักงานเศรษฐกิจอุตสาหกรรม, 2564)
