National Energy Technology Center (ENTEC), a member of National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) collaborates with the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP) to host the orientation seminar for the project “Study for Establishing Baseline Data and Tracking Greenhouse Gas Emission Reductions through Vehicle Energy Efficiency Measures.”

The seminar featured presentations by Dr. Nuwong Chollacoop, Director of the Low Carbon Energy Research Group and Dr. Peerawat Saisirirat, a researcher from the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Research Team, both representing ENTEC. They provided an overview of the study’s initial framework and engaged in discussions with relevant stakeholders, gathering crucial feedback for further refinement.

The seminar fostered a dynamic exchange of insights, ensuring that the development of baseline data and the tracking of greenhouse gas emission align with vehicle energy efficiency improvement measures. In a significant step towards advancing sustainable energy solutions, the National Energy Technology (ENTEC) and the Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO) collaborated on a knowledge-sharing event on “Hydrogen and Energy Technology Trends.” The event, organized by the Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO), spanned from September 4-18, 2024, at the Bangkok Midtown Hotel.

Dr. Sumittra Charojrochkul, Executive Director of ENTEC, along with Dr. Nuwong Chollacoop, Director of the Low Carbon Energy Research Group, were invited as distinguished guest speakers for the “Energy Policy Human Resource Capability Development” program. Dr. Sumittra delivered an insightful lecture on “Fuel Cell Technology and Thailand’s Hydrogen Policy,” while Dr. Nuwong presented an overview of “Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy Policies” outlining the roadmap to support Thailand’s ambitious drive towards energy transition and climate change adaptation.

Additionally, Dr. Sumittra also participated in the Thailand’s Hydrogen Policy committee meeting on September 18, where she shared her expert opinions and recommendations to support the development of the Hydrogen Production and Utilization in Energy Sector Plan for 2024 – 2050.

The “Energy Policy Human Resource Capability Development” program aims to establish knowledge, understanding, enhance capabilities, and upskill for EPPO staff. The program aligns with both national and global energy contexts. The curriculum covers key areas such as the National Energy Plan, Thailand Power Development Plan, Oil Plan, Thailand Energy Efficiency Development Plan and Alternative Energy Development plan. By fostering collaboration among agencies within the Ministry of Energy, the program seeks to build an integrated network to enable efficient and effective operations to support energy transition and to successfully achieve national energy goals.

Dr. Visarn Lilavivat, a researcher from Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Research Team, National Energy Technology Center (ENTEC), represented ENTEC at a meeting of the APEC Research Center for Advanced Biohydrogen Technology (APEC-ACABT) visit to the APEC Center for Technology Foresight (APEC-CTF). The meeting, hosted by the APEC Center for Technology Foresight (APEC-CTF), brought together key representatives from Chulalongkorn University, Kasetsart University, and the Office of National Higher Education Science Research and Innovation Policy Council (NXPO).

During this meeting, Dr. Visarn engaged in discussions with Professor Dr. Shu-Yii Wu, CEO of APEC-ACABT, and other members of the team regarding the establishment of the ACABT Bangkok Chapter in Thailand. ENTEC showcased the potential of bioenergy in Thailand, highlighting ongoing projects focused on hydrogen production form biogas. These initiatives align with APEC-ACABT’s Green Synergy Solution (GSS) goals and Thailand’s Bio-Circular-Green Economy (BCG) strategy.

This meeting marks a significant advancement in fostering collaboration on bioenergy technologies between Thailand and APEC, with a mutual commitment to developing environmentally friendly sustainable technologies and promoting a green circular economy.

On September 13, 2024, Dr. Visarn Lilavivat, a senior researcher at the National Energy Technology Center (ENTEC), delivered a keynote address at a conference organized by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry in New Delhi, India. The event focused on the critical role of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in advancing green hydrogen technologies (titled “MSMEs – a key player in advancement of Green Hydrogen”).

In his address, Dr. Visarn outlined Thailand’s hydrogen strategy, highlighting ENTEC’s Bio-Hydrogen project and the development of low-carbon hydrogen standards. He emphasized how these initiatives align with global trends toward sustainable energy solutions.

National Energy Technology Center (ENTEC), National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), hosted a distinguished delegation from the Japan Analytical Instruments Manufacturers’ Association (JAIMA) for a laboratory visit. On this occasion, Dr. Sumittra Charojrochkul, ENTEC Executive Director, and Dr. Lily Eurwilaichitr, Assistant Executive Director, welcomed Mr. Tatsuyori Takemoto, Vice Chairman of JAIMA’s International Affairs Committee, and his colleagues for to ENTEC. During the visit, Dr. Sumittra delivered an overview of ENTEC’s research activities. Both parties have engaged in fostering dialogue on potential future networking opportunities. Subsequently, the JAIMA delegation was given an exclusive tour of ENTEC’s research facilities, including:

  1. Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Research Laboratory (RENT): Miss Kanokwan Maikaew and Mr. Pham Dinh Thao, research assistants, showcased the lab’s research work in hydrogen energy technology
  2. Energy Storage Technology Research Laboratory (ESTT): Dr. Manop Masomtob provided an in-depth look at battery pack design and development, including a demonstration of the electric motorcycle chassis dynamometer testing facility.

National Energy Technology Center (ENTEC), participated in a seminar organized by the IEEE Power & Energy Society (Thailand) in collaboration with the Thailand Energy Storage Technology Association (TESTA).

The seminar, titled “Energy Storage in Power Systems: Technology Trends, Opportunities, and Applications,” featured presentations from Dr. Thanya Phraewphiphat and Dr. Jiravan Mongkoltanatas, researchers from ENTEC’s Energy Storage Technology Research Team. Dr. Thanya delivered a lecture on “Advancements in Energy Storage Technology,” while Dr. Jiravan provided and overview on “Benefits, Applications, and Current Situations of Energy Storage Systems in Power Systems: Both Domestically and Internationally.” Additionally, Dr. Jiravan participated in a panel discussion on “Examples, Key Mechanisms, Problems and Obstacles, Opportunities, and Applications of Energy Storage Systems in Power Systems,” alongside experts from universities, government agencies, and leading private companies.

The seminar highlighted the growing attention on electricity generation from renewable sources driven by technological advancements and government commitments. It is anticipated that renewable sources such as solar, wind, biomass, hydro, and hydrogen will account for over 50% of total electricity production in the future. This transition is motivated by environmental concerns and Thailand’s goals set at COP 28, including achieving Carbon Neutrality by 2050 and Net Zero emissions by 2065. To maximize the use of renewable energy, diverse energy storage systems are crucial for managing energy fluctuations and uncertainties of renewable sources, thereby enhancing the efficiency, stability and reliability of the entire electrical system.

National Energy Technology Center (ENTEC), National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), participated in a seminar to present research findings on “The Sustainable Management of End-of-Life Electric Vehicles and Batteries”. The event, held at Avani Ratchada Hotel in Bangkok, was organized by the Thailand Automotive Institute.

ENTEC’s delegation led by Dr. Pimpa Limthongkul, Director of the Energy Innovation Research Group (EIRG), accompanied by researcher, Dr. Nattanai Kunanusont attended the event. This project is a collaborative effort between Thailand Automotive Institute and ENTEC, NSTDA, with invaluable support from the Office of Industrial Economics (OIE). The project’s primary objective is to formulate comprehensive policy recommendations aimed at fostering and regulating sustainable industries for end-of-life electric vehicles and their batteries within Thailand.

The event featured the insightful research findings presentations from the research team, comprising Dr. Pimpa Limthongkul, Dr. Jiravan Mongkoltanatas, Dr. Ukrit Sahapatsombut, Dr. Manop Masomtob, Dr. Nattanai Kunanusont, Mr. Viset Lailuck, and Mr. Patharakorn Rattanawan from NECTEC.

During the event, Dr. Pimpa elucidated on the potential of implementing a Battery Passport system in Thailand, a concept that could revolutionize battery lifecycle management. Dr. Nattanai delivered a presentation on “Lessons Learned from Simulating the Electric Vehicle (xEV) Dismantling Business – High Voltage Battery Management.” These topics garnered significant interest from industry representatives across the end-of-life electric vehicle management supply chain who attended the seminar.

The National Energy Technology Center (ENTEC) under the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), organized a series of training conferences as part of the “Capability Building for Energy Transition” program for the Office of Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC). This program aims to enhance capabilities and prepare Thailand for future energy transitions, aligning with national policies to achieve Carbon Neutrality goal by 2050 and the Net Zero Emission target by 2065.

Led by Dr. Sumittra Charojrochkul, Executive Director of ENTEC, along with Dr. Nuwong Chollacoop, Director of the Low Carbon Energy Research Group, and Dr. Visarn Lilawiwat, Researcher, the ENTEC team developed and organized the training series to equip ERC personnel with knowledge of breakthrough energy technologies. The goal is to foster a deeper understanding of energy innovations and emerging trends in future energy technologies.

The team facilitated meetings and site visits both in Thailand and abroad, gaining strategic insights firsthand. Notable visits included Thailand’s first hydrogen refueling prototype station for fuel cell electric vehicles, SVOLT Energy Technology (Thailand) Co., Ltd., University of Yamanashi, TEPCO Komekurayama solar photovoltaic power plant, JERA Yokohama power plant, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), ENEOS company, and Fukushima Hydrogen Energy Research Field (FH2R).

This program offers a valuable opportunity to engage with leading agencies and companies, fostering future collaboration and network building at both domestic and international levels.

Dr. Lily Eurwilaichitr, Assistant Executive Director of ENTEC, along with Dr. Chaiyuth SaeKung, Researcher of the Clean Fuel Technology and Advanced Chemistry Research Lab, ENTEC and members of the BIOTEC research team, welcomed the visiting delegation from Mitsui Chemicals Crop & Life Solutions, Inc. (MCCLS) and ICBiotech, Osaka University, Japan, and discussed potential research collaborations.

During this visit, Dr. Lily introduced ENTEC and NSTDA. Then, Dr. Norikazu Higashimura, a senior researcher from MCCLS presented an overview of the company and their research interests. Following this, Dr. Chanwit Suriyachadkun, head of the Microbial Diversity and Utilization Research Team, presented research on biodiversity and its utilization, Dr. Alongkorn Amnuaykanjanasin, head of the Biocontrol Technology Research Team introduced the research and development of bio-products for pest control and Dr. Chaiyuth presented on the development of bio-surfactants from palm oil for pest control applications.

The MCCLS research team showed interest in ENTEC and BIOTEC’s research, asking questions and exchanging ideas. The visited labs also included Thailand Bioresource Research Center (TBRC) and the Biocontrol Technology Research Laboratory. This event marked an excellent opportunity to establish future collaborations and a cooperative network.

Dr. Pimpa Limthongkul, Director of Energy Innovation Research Group, the National Energy Technology Center (ENTEC), NSTDA and President of the Thai Energy Storage Technology Association (TESTA), along with Dr. Nattanai Kunanusont, an ENTEC’s researcher, participated in the 2nd ASEAN Battery & Electric Vehicle Technology Conference (ABTC) 2024. The event took place from August 21-23, 2024, at the Shangri-La Rasa Sentosa in Singapore.

The ABCT 2024 is the second conference of its kind, following the inaugural event held in Bali, Indonesia. The conference serves as a crucial platform for advancing the ASEAN region’s battery and electric vehicle industries, promoting cross-border collaboration and encouraging sustainable practices within the sector.

Dr. Pimpa participated in a panel discussion titled “Navigating ASEAN Government Policies: Current and Future Impact on the EV, ESS and Battery Sectors.” The session brought together researchers, experts and policy makers from across the region to discuss the evolving landscape of government policies and their impact on the electric vehicle, energy storage, and battery sectors.

Dr. Nattanai contributed to a panel discussion on “End of Life/Circularity: ASEAN and Global Trends in Battery End-of-Life Strategies,” which was moderated by Dr. Pimpa. This session provided a platform for exchanging knowledge and exploring research on battery end-of-life management, emphasizing the importance of sustainable and circular practices in the industry.
